The agricultural sector is the mainstay of the Kenya’s economy. The sector directly contributes 24% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 27% of GDP indirectly through linkages with manufacturing, distribution and other service related sectors. Approximately 45% of Government revenue is derived from agriculture and the sector contributes over 75% of industrial raw materials and more than 50% of the export earnings. The sector is the largest employer in the economy, accounting for 60% of the total employment. Millions of people have turned farming and agriculture into a way of life, because most have seen the supply and demand of domestic products in both Kenya and Africa.
By act of parliament the Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) was established in 2013. It merged with KARI, Coffee Research Foundation, Tea Research Foundation and the Kenya Sugar Research Foundation and has lead on 18 research institutes. The new institution has an asset and equity base of Ksh28 billion and Ksh27.9 billion respectively.
The Government of Kenya has supported agriculture and horticulture greatly because of the income it brings in the country. The famous GFC Sacco aims to venture in this area as well.
In 2008, the Government of Kenya launched Kenya Vision 2030 as the new long-term development blueprint for the country whose focus is to create a “Globally competitive and prosperous country with a high quality of life by 2030”.
